DONALD G.R. JOHNSON
Donald
Born November 18, 1948, in Clonmel, St Mary, Jamaica Donald completed studies at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts with a Diploma with Honors in Ceramics 1973. Before becoming a full time potter he worked as a Lab Technician in the Mineral Resources Division of the Scientific Research Council of Jamaica and as Tutor in Charge of the Ceramic Department at the Jamaica School of Art now known as Edna Manley School of Visual Arts (EMSVA) replacing Cecil Baugh.

As a full time potter Donald has been responsible for extensive research in Jamaican raw materials suitable for application to the ceramics industry. His successes include casting slips and a porcelain body from local materials; the design and construction of several kilns; a burner designed to vaporize and burn both kerosene and diesel oils. He hasMugs acted as consultant to Projects for People, a non government organization, in establishing an inner city ceramic project: as consultant to Hodges Minerals in developing the processing of Jamaican raw materials and Manager for two years of PAMACO Ceramics during which time he developed a very successful figurine line. Donald has served as a member of the Jamaica Potters Association; External Examiner and member of the Curriculum Advisory Committee for the EMSVA.

Donald Donald's current main interests outside of pottery are the computer and the internet. He also experiments a great deal with the smoking of poultry, and will not miss a live broadcast of a West Indies one day international cricket match.

Figure He has participated in several exhibitions since 1976 when he set up the Clonmel Potters Studio with his wife Belva , in St. Mary. Their work can be seen in collections all over the world. An  exhibition of note titled "The Clonmel Potters in New York" was held at the Jamaican Consulate in Manhattan in 1995.
Awards include the Bronze Musgrave MedalDish from the Institute of Jamaica in the field of Art 1994 and the Jamaica Society of Scientists and Technologists Award for "Innovation and Creativity in Science and Technology"1989.

His favourite subject, the female nude, has been a recurring theme over the years in a variety of media, including an exhibition of charcoal and pencil drawings on paper; drawings on clay using various techniques;
modeling in clay as well as two series of limited edition
bronzes which are now collector's items.
